Cornelia Wathen is on the Initiating Committee of Transition Marbletown which hosts weekly meetings and events to foster community, affordable health care, local food, economy, collaboration and enjoyment. Through Transition work, she also met two other co-creators of the new branch of Healthcare is a Human Right: Rondout Valley Holistic Health Center, opening March 20. Cornelia describes herself as wife and mother; she also teaches qi gong and is a certified Brennan Science Healer.

Tina Clarke, Certified Transition Trainer. Transition Network supports community-led responses to climate change and shrinking supplies of cheap energy, building resilience and happiness. These involve meeting your neighbors, sharing resources and skills, and having fun doing it! Tina will be leading a Training for Transition in Marbletown on March 17-18.

Turn Up the Peace

Phillip Kanakis and Nandapriya Sattva are co-founders of Turn Up the Peace. Starting in Carnegie Hall last January, Turn Up the Peace brings together a joyous array of musicians at each event. Their next concert is at the Bardovan in Poughkeepsie. Music of love, peace, and unity, give audiences a visceral experience of peace while raising funds for projects of peace. Phillip and Nandapriya talked about the joy and freedom of commitment and stepping outside of the comfort zone.

New Hope is not a Building

Tyrell Bennermon, Natasha Thomas and Shakiba Storts all lead programs at the New Hope Community Center on Smith St in Poughkeepsie. They share with us their passion for their work, their enthusiasm towards the young people who come to the Center, and their hopes and vision for the future.

New Hope offers many programs at the Center itself, and is beginning to collaborate with local schools and government to bring programs out of the building and further into the community.

Support for LGBTQ Youth

Nora Olsen is the author of a new novel for young adults, THE END: Five Queer Kids Save The World. Last fall, in response to the rash of teen suicides that made the headlines (and all the others that didn’t make the headlines) she organized a rally in Beacon in support of our youth. Zara Ansell is the outreach coordinator at the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Center in Kingston. Both women speak about the ongoing need for community support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LBGTQ) youth.

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth.

New Hope Community Center

Also with us is Rich Reed, who runs several youth programs at the center. The Center’s mission is to improve the quality of lives for individuals, children and families within our communities by promoting social, economic and cultural opportunities.

Susan Weeks is a Physician Assistant and co-founder of Healthcare is a Human Right, which offers a free health clinic every month in for the Kingston, Woodstock & Phoenicia areas. Susan has worked in emergency rooms, as a midwife and as a homeopath. She practices “guerrilla medicine,” bringing compassion and healing to the people.
