We speak with five of the eleven high school students who spent the summer as members of Project ABLE, a project of Mill Street Loft. For six weeks, in collaboration with the Children’s Media Project and Radio Uprising, the Project ABLE group learned how to create a radio show, episodes of which aired on WVKR from 4 to 5 pm on six Thursdays. Choosing topics of importance to them, the students interviewed, recorded, edited and produced Turn It Up! We ask the young people what they learned from the project, and play some excerpts.

New Hope is not a Building

Tyrell Bennermon, Natasha Thomas and Shakiba Storts all lead programs at the New Hope Community Center on Smith St in Poughkeepsie. They share with us their passion for their work, their enthusiasm towards the young people who come to the Center, and their hopes and vision for the future.

New Hope offers many programs at the Center itself, and is beginning to collaborate with local schools and government to bring programs out of the building and further into the community.

New Hope Community Center

January 26th, 2011 – Patricia King of the Poughkeepsie Housing Authority tells us about the New Hope Community Center, which Patti directs. Also with us is Rich Reed, who runs several youth programs at the center. The Center’s mission is to improve the quality of lives for individuals, children and families within our communities by promoting social, economic and cultural opportunities.
