<p>Kristian Gustavson, co-founder of <a href="http://www.belowthesurface.org/" target="_blank">Below           the Surface</a>, a coast         to coast exploration of America&#8217;s waterways. Kristian is an activist,         conservationist, and adventurer among other things. This summer he is         taking his second small-watercraft trip down the Mississippi River from         its headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. His trip will serve to bring attention       to issues of water pollution and river recovery.</p>

<p>In 1969 the newly built sloop &#8216;Clearwater&#8217; first visited Beacon. A small       band of local youngsters and oldsters organized a welcoming festival to       support the valiant crew of the sloop and to help spread Clearwater&#8217;s environmental       message. Thus began the <a href="http://www.beaconsloop.org/" target="_blank">Beacon     Sloop Club</a>.</p>

Rosen Thomas is the author of the forth-coming book,       <a href="http://www.tamu.edu/upress/BOOKS/2008/rosen.htm" target="_blank"><em>Living       in the Woods in a Tree</em></a>, about her years with Texas music legend <a href="http://www.myspace.com/texasghostwritersmusic" target="_blank">Blaze       Foley</a>.</p>
